Pharmacist James Black selected as VCU Outstanding Preceptor for 2020-2021

Bradley Free Clinic does more than provide services to the area’s underserved. We also serve a critical role in developing the skills of the next generation of medical practitioners.

Pharmacist James Black

Pharmacist James Black was recently named an Outstanding Preceptor by Virginia Commonwealth University. A preceptor is a teacher in a clinical setting who will help students grow from a novice into a competent, professional pharmacist. During experiential education, student pharmacists are taught by experienced pharmacist preceptors.

The Outstanding Preceptor Award recognizes preceptors who have demonstrated excellence in educating students on rotations.

“We are very proud of James and this exceptional recognition for his work,” said Executive Director Janine Underwood.

In addition to supervising staff and volunteers, Black manages all aspects of the pharmacy department. This includes filling prescriptions, engaging in patient education, conducting chart reviews for medication and vaccine administration, and advocating the most services possible to eligible patients.

VCU students nominate preceptors for Outstanding Preceptor Awards during their rotations. Here are comments from one of the students who supported the nomination:

“He is uplifting, supportive, and truly wants the best for all of those he interacts with. Mr. Black goes above and beyond the call of duty for his students, making them feel valued, important, and integrated into the team at the Clinic. I will genuinely go forward as a better pharmacist and a better person due to Mr. Black. And his impact on me can’t be overstated.”
